Plan your Household Hazardous Waste Day trip:

  • Remain inside your vehicle at the hazardous waste drop off: event staff will unload your household hazardous waste for you.
  • Make your household hazardous waste easily accessible: keep it separate from other wastes or items in your vehicle.
  • Assess your health before attending: if you are feeling sick, do not attend.
  • Attending an event outside your regular municipality? Only your household hazardous waste will be accepted (no other wastes).

Items Accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Days

Any containers with fluids (ie, gasoline, oil, paint, etc.) must have secure, proper lids or caps.

  • Aerosol cans (full or partially full)
  • Automotive fluids
  • Batteries – vehicle (automotive, marine, etc.)
  • Batteries – household (rechargeable and single-use)
  • Cleaners (bleach, oven cleaner, etc.)
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Fertilizers
  • Finishing products (varnish, glue, etc.)
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Gasoline (containers NOT returned)
  • Motor oil (must be capped)
  • Paint (latex and oil, full or partially full)
  • Pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides
  • Pool chemicals
  • Propane cylinders
  • Propane tanks
  • Solvents (varsol, paint thinners, etc.)

Not Accepted

  • Sharps (needles, syringes, lancets)
  • PCBs
  • Radioactive waste
  • Pathological waste

Due to provincial regulations, these events are for residents onlyHazardous waste is NOT accepted from businesses and organizations, including builders, camps, charities, contractors, painting companies, places of worship, restaurants, retailers, schools, etc.

These businesses and organizations need to arrange private haulage and processing of hazardous waste:

Items with the corrosive, explosive, flammable and toxic symbols should never be placed in your garbage or recycling, or poured down a drain.

Paint

Did you know? For free, you can drop-off paint at Haliburton Home Hardware and Minden Home Hardware for recycling. They’ll accept any brand of latex or oil-based paint during regular operating hours. Quantity limits may apply. This take-back program is operated by producer responsibility organization, Product Care Recycling.

Year-round drop-off of Special Waste

You can drop off the following special waste at our landfills at any time:

  • Antifreeze containers – 30 litres or less (empty only)
    • Not empty windshield washer fluid jugs – those go in Recycling for Containers
  • Household batteries
    • Not automotive or boat batteries
  • Oil containers – 30 litres or less (empty only)
  • Propane cylinders (empty only)
  • Propane tanks (empty only)
