TOXINS IN YOUR TACKLE BOX!

You can do something positive for our Lakes and our Loons by eliminating the use of lead fishing tackle.

The “Let’s Get the Lead Out” program is an initiative designed to reduce toxic lead fishing tackle from accumulating in the environment where it is responsible for the deaths of millions of birds and other wildlife annually.  Loons, eagles, swans and waterfowl are especially vulnerable.  Lead is very harmful to all living things, including people and it threatens our water quality.

Lead (Pb) is a neuro-toxin which attacks the nervous system of birds and mammals when ingested, and can lead to blindness, decreased reproductivity, seizures and death. Lead is fatal to loons and other aquatic birds.

Once again, this year during the KLCOA Rock Bass Derby and throughout the summer, there will also be a focus on Invasive Species Awareness in our Lakes and the hazards of using Lead Fishing Tackle on wildlife.  Lead fishing tackle is a major contributor to Loon Mortality (www.fishleadfree.ca).

Bring your lead tackle to the Rock Bass Derby Weigh-In on July 5.

Lead tackle will be collected at the Rock Bass Derby “weigh-in” station and at the Marina throughout the summer and information on lead-free fishing tackle will be provided to participants.  This initiative is sponsored by U-Links and the KLCOA.
