The Kennisis Lakes are located just southwest of Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. Kennisis Lake (45.218842, -78.632350) and Little Kennisis Lake (45.256624, -78.583599) are both headwater lakes in the Haliburton Highlands and are entirely in the Municipality of Dysart et al in the County of Haliburton. The lakes were formed some 11,000 years ago by a process called glaciation, which refers to the formation, movement and recession of glaciers. The continental glaciers scraped across Ontario fracturing rock and leaving behind stronger unbroken rock. These Glaciers formed the Kennisis river valley via the glacial movement in the north-south direction. This created the steep-sided gorges within the Kennisis Lakes.
Kennisis Lake is the largest Lake in Haliburton County and the second largest in the Haliburton Highlands. The Kennisis Lakes waterfront property lots are almost entirely privately owned, with the newest residences and cottages being built on the western shore. The Kennisis Lakes are bordered by Haliburton Forest on the north and east, and by the Frost Centre Crown Preserve to the west. The Kennisis Lakes are accessible through the village of West Guilford on County Road 7, Kennisis Lake Road.
