From the President’s Desk

Back

As I compose this newsletter, the sounds of spring are in the air: the lapping of the water, the trill of the robins and the BOOM of blasting as the development of the new road continues.  What a curious mix!

I hope that all members of the Association have wintered well.  It’s been pretty quiet up here on the lake.  To the best of our knowledge, there have been no break-ins, so you can be reasonably confident that you will find your cottage just as you left it.  In case you do find that you have suffered a break-in, please let our Community Policing President, Bill Elliott, know.  You’ll find his number later on in this newsletter.

We had our fair share of snow this winter so it was a great year for snowmobiling and skiing.  I know that the businesses, which depend on these activities, are really grateful.

This newsletter is one means by which we try to keep you up-to-date about important information and events.  As a result of the fall mailing, we had about one dozen returned as “moved”.  That means that those people will not receive this newsletter.  Additionally, if something had gone wrong on their property, it would have been very difficult for us to contact them.  Keeping our records current and accurate is really important to us; so if you’re moving or if you sell your property, put us on the list of people who need to know.

The executive has worked since our last general meeting to prepare for this current year.  Please take the time to read the information in this newsletter and direct any questions you may have to the appropriate executive member.

For those who have subscribed to receive this newsletter “on line”, I hope this new venture will work for you.  It’s been a learning experience for me, which shows that you really can teach an old dog new tricks.  If you are on line and wish to subscribe in the future, please read the instructions, which are printed later on in this missive.  Also, check out our website, klcoa.org, as it contains many handy links.

As you prepare for another summer season, please be aware that your executive cannot solve all the problems of the lake.  We can’t settle disputes with your neighbours, we won’t shoot that annoying barking dog and we won’t render inactive that bright light in your neighbour’s driveway.  What we will do is encourage our members to be considerate and we will work hard to continue to provide those activities, which will make being on Kennisis this summer a wonderful time.

I hope this is your best year ever and I look forward to seeing you at our General meeting on May 19.

NEED A NEW SIGN? Back

Thanks to one of our members, Bob Read, we have purchased 400 additional signs. So if you don’t have a sign or if yours has become worn out, please contact either Earla Hume or Dave Mills. We’ll also have some available at our general meeting in May.

LAKE DEVELOPMENT

Back

At the time of this writing, here’s what’s been happening concerning the development between “Soap Pond” and the dam.

Our concerns over the treatment of “Soap Pond” have been addressed.  The Department of Fisheries and Oceans had insisted that the creek bed be left natural.  To that end, rather than use culverts as originally planned, a concrete span has been installed.  The developer has also committed to shoreline restoration and there is every indication that this area will be placed in a land trust as a nature conservancy.

The developer will work to keep recognized portages open.

Most, if not all of the lots in the first two phases of the development have been sold and there is an ad in the current edition of “Cottage Life” advertising the third phase, which will be right up to the dam.

A preliminary plan to develop the area from

“Cat Bay” to “Soap Pond” has been submitted, but it has not yet been approved.

I have been assured by the Planning Department that:

  • All lots are zoned “seasonal residential”
  • No lots are zoned commercial
  • Subdividing approved lots is not permissible

The Council of Dysart et al is aware of our concern that development proceed responsibly and I know that our councillor, Leon Jones, has been working to protect our interests.  It should also be noted that we are informed about any requests for zoning and/or by-law changes.

We also continue to have our lawyer working on our behalf to make certain that development does not seriously impact on the pristine quality of our environment.

Many thanks to Blair Johnston, our Lake Steward, who has worked hard on our behalf on this touchy issue.

ROADS REPORT – Fred Musinka

Back

At the time of this writing, Dysart’s Roads Department has not had their budget for 2001 approved.  A number of projects around Kennisis have been discussed and the following appear headed for approval.

  • Watts Trail to be paved for approximately 2 kms to #67 in time for the July long weekend. Of the 11.5 km around Little Kennisis Lake, 5.5 will have been paved. Emphasis is being placed on paving the balance as soon as possible to avoid the costly activity of grading and applying dust suppressant such as Dombind or calcium both not too friendly to the environment.
  • North Kennisis Drive just before Bone Creek (app. # 100) should be dynamited sometime this
summer/fall.  This project was started last year in order to straighten the roadway, but more importantly to create a drainage ditch which will prevent the roadway from continued deterioration and severe winter ice formation.
  • South Kennisis Drive near Boomstick will be improved to reduce a hazard.  A hydro pole will have to be moved to complete this project.
  • Other general maintenance operations will be performed as time and money permit.

An update will be provided at the general meeting on May 19.

ON THE WATERFRONT

Back

Swimming – Earla Hume

Once again we will be conducting swimming lessons at the old Backwoods Marina site.  Our instructors from last year will be back.  Details are still being worked out, but the dates will most likely be:

  • July 9   – August 18

More details will be available by our general meeting.

Sailing – Pete Sulman

Unfortunately we have had to cancel our bid to host a BOOM Sailing programme.  Our efforts through the fall bulletin were encouraging in that about 10 kids were registered.  On that basis we were willing to take the chance that we’d get more.  However, 8 of the 10 cancelled and so we have pulled out.  Because of the new structure of the course, it is unlikely that we’ll be ever able to participate. Last year’s Regatta was a great success and it’s hoped that this year will be even better.  The date set is Sunday August 5.  Pray for winds.

Rock Bass Tournament – Keith Rodd

Our annual Rock Bass tournament will be on the licence-free, family fishing weekend of July 7. Registration will be from 9:00 am – 9:30 am on the 7th.  More details will be posted

Regatta/Fun Day – Keith Rodd

This annual popular event will be held at the Marina on Saturday August 4 with Sunday August 5 as the “rain date”.
