First Aid Training Course - June 24 & 25

KLCOA Sponsored a Red Cross Certified First Aid Last June with 12 participants. The course was a huge success. Kate O’Connor made it fun and interactive, and her 10 years of teaching experience shone through. Kate is excited to offer the course again this year!

The 2-day course prepares you to use an AED and offers many other valuable first aid skills. See below for a comprehensive list of the skills covered in the course. The course is being offered to a limited number of participants on a cost-recovery basis if there is sufficient interest.

When: Sat June 24 & Sun 25th 9am-5pm Fee: $125.00 (Email money transfer to Kate or cash or cheque on the day of the course. Cash best.)

Where: 1975 Watts Rd. in the loft above the garage (Tayce Wakefield's & Roy Campbell's - which is at the far end of Little Kennisis Lake, near the old Kennisis Lake Lodge).

Who: Open to anyone interested. No experience or prior certification necessary. A maximum of 18 spaces available. We will run the course with a minimum of 10 people. Registration is on a first-to-reserve basis.

Instructor: Kate O'Connor (daughter of KLCOA Board member, Terry O'Connor), is an employee of Diamond Medical First Aid. Kate is a certified Red Cross First Aid Instructor, retired lifeguard, and Advanced First Aider. She has taught First Aid for 10 years. She is also a certified Yoga Teacher with 15 years in that field, thus her knowledge of anatomy and injuries is quite comprehensive.

Course Name: Standard First Aid Governing Body: Canadian Red Cross and Red Crescent Society

Length: 16 Hours Course Content: Resuscitation steps for unconscious, non-breathing adults, children, & infants. This includes unblocking blocked airways and choking skills. Recognizing heart attacks and strokes and their risk factors. Operation of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Legalities of doing first aid. Limitations of your training EMS/9-1-1 system. Treating shock. Bandaging life threatening bleeds (arterial bleeds, amputations, impaled objects, chest injuries). Internal bleeding signs and concussion (prevention, signs and symptoms, treatment) Secondary surveys (questions we ask ill and injured people). Minor bleeds Medications (what not to do, questions to ask, how to assist people with their own medications). Epi Pen training (signs of severe allergic reactions, use of an Epi Pen). Seizures & Epilepsy Burns (chemical, electrical, thermal, frost bite) Hypothermia & heat stroke. Diabetic emergencies. Bones & joints (splinting fractures, sprains, strains and dislocations.) Poisonings (ingested, inhaled, injected, absorbed) including alcohol overdoses. Bites & stings. Facial wounds (nosebleeds, knocked out teeth). Spinal injuries (how to recognize and immobilize). Emergency childbirth Contents of a well-stocked first aid kit (A well-stocked Red Cross First Aid Kit can be purchased for $49 incl HST. ) PLUS: Scenario practice and First Aid Jeopardy complete with a buzz-in system! This certification meets the requirements for: contractors, students entering healthcare-related fields at post-secondary institutions, camp counsellors, swim instructors, lifeguards, and coaches & trainers of community sports activities.

To pay in advance, email money transfer $125 to: kateyoga@rogers.com. If paying on the day of the course, cash is preferred. Cheques accepted also. Sorry, no credit cards.

*Every participant will receive a Red Cross Certificate when they leave.

Participants are asked to bring their own brown-bag lunches and beverages/snacks. If you have a yoga mat or garden kneeling pad, please bring. You will be kneeling on the floor for the CPR portion of the course. There is parking for about 10 cars and 2 boats, so carpooling is suggested.
